We build custom U-shape enclosures for you in 2-3 days. The U-shape enclosure style is highly versatile and can solve a number of enclosure challenges in its standard form, or it can serve as a base for further customization. U-shape enclosures are commonly used with circuit boards that have through-panel connectors limited to one side (L-shape enclosures can more easily accommodate boards with through-panel connectors on opposing sides). As with all our enclosures, custom cutouts are included, so you don't have to waste time drilling and filing as with off-the-shelf enclosures. We thought we'd share our perspective as happy customers of Backblaze's online backup service. Although our core company backup activities are looked after internally by our IT staff, management laptops were a loose end that required manual intervention. We had tried other solutions in the past, but nothing was satisfactory. It took time to back these machines up, but more importantly, it didn't get done as often as it should, which was in invitation to disaster. Backblaze was a perfect solution. Downloading and installing the small utility onto the laptops was simple, and it is truly unobtrusive, operating in the background with no perceivable performance penalty. Although we have yet to do a recovery, we checked that we could access our data, and it was indeed readily available. The cost is absolutely minimal, versus the time and interruption required for manual back, as well as the risk exposure from procrastination. Thus we whole heartedly recommend this service to anyone who wishes to have data security without the constant hassles associated with traditional backup approaches.

• How do I order?

• What is Protocase's relationship with Backblaze
  Protocase worked for Backblaze in the development of the Backblaze Storage Pod. The companies have no other formal affilition, other than that Protocase is a happy Backblaze backup service customer.
• What if I have questions?
  Use the same contact information as above, we love to provide customer service.
• Do you ship outside North America and the UK?
  Absolutely, the open-source storage community is very international, and we have made a number of shipments Continental Europe, Russia, Africa, Asia, and Australia/New Zealand. Shipment is usually by international courier. It is generally expensive (these are large enclosures!) but not prohibitive.
• Why do you sell the pods without hard drives?
  There are numerous vendors who sell hard drives at very compeitive prices. Storage drives are the largest single cost in a backblaze storage pod, and in fact are more expensive than the everything else combined. Thus we felt that by offering assembled and tested Pods without harddrives, you could get the best of both worlds: greatly reduced hassle compared to sourcing all the components separately, and still minimize your cost.
• Will you customize an enclosure for me?
  Absolutely, we build them from scratch for you, so we can do any customization that you wish. However, extra charges will apply, depending on the extent of customization. You can choose from the minor customizations below, and also we can build basically anything that you can design.
  • Custom color - Custom Color from Protocase powdercoat color list. There will be a flat setup charge of $135 per order for stock custom colors. We can accommodate requests for fully custom colors that are not in our stock list, contact us for details and costs.
  • Custom Logo – We can remove the Backblaze logo at no cost. However if you choose to replace the logo with your company logo there is a charge of $80 for a cutout logo, or we can supply custom silkscreening if we are provided with artwork. The cost for custom silkscreening for each color-side is a one-time, $40 setup fee, plus screen production fee of $30 each time you order.
• What is the lead time?
  Enclosures generally ship within 2-3 days, although certain customizations may require extra time. Assembled systems ship in 1 week, with extra time required for larger orders.
• What redundancies are built into the system, beyond the RAID-6 in the storage drive array?
  Dual NICs is the only redundancy. This is intentional, as Backblaze works with the redundancy available through their huge array of storage pods. However, several people have mentioned to us that when using a single pod, this is not adequate. Thus we are looking into the possibility of designing an 'extra-redundant' :) pod, that would remove the two remaining major points of failure by adding redundant power supplies and boot drives. We would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has thoughts in this area.
• Can you supply cloud software?
  Unfortunately, the pods come with nothing more than a basic installation of Debian Linux. We have no expertise in cloud software, and cannot help. If anyone has any software that they wish to offer, either open source or commercial, we would be happy to pass the message along to our customer base and/or post on this webpage.
